The desire for Expirimentation and Imagination

“I cannot and will not live without Art!” shouts sculptor Rik ten Cate on his website. That passion is also evident in his work, which embodies his desire for experimentation and his rich imagination. His favorite material is bronze, which he used to create a series of slender angels, among other sculptures. But Ten Cate also works with materials such as wood, stone, ceramics and glass, exploring and exploiting their endless possibilities.

Ten Cate graduated from the Academy for Fine Art in Amersfoort in 1988 and then went on to study at the Utrecht School of the Arts. But he also learned a great deal in practice: “I learned to cast bronze by watching other artists and now have my own approach. The same goes for work in the smithy, and for stone, and even for glass – and I continue to learn.” More recently Ten Cate has started making land art, his sculptures gracing the landscape.

In addition to his artistic work, Ten Cate also lectures at the teacher training college of Hogeschool Helicon in Zeist and at the Free Academy for Fine Art in Driebergen.
