Chris Linder

Chris Linder uses photographs and video to tell stories about science.  With his images of scientists exploring extreme environments, he aims to challenge the traditional science stereotype. “To me, science is more than numbers on a spreadsheet,” Linder recently said in an interview with MIT News Magazine. “By photographing scientists at work in the field, I aim to show how creative thinking and resourceful problem-solving are essential to discovery.”  Linder also uses his images to inspire future generations and to foster respect for the planet’s wild places.

Linder has documented more than forty scientific expeditions—with over half of them to the polar regions.  His training as an oceanographer enables him to capture the essence of scientific fieldwork in his pictures, as is demonstrated in his book Science on Ice: Four Polar Expeditions, published in 2011.  Linder’s photographs of scientists, landscapes, flora, and fauna have graced the pages of many magazines and other media, and have been exhibited in some of the world’s leading museums. He has received awards from the BBC, Nature’s Best, and the International Conservation Photography Awards.
