The Art of a Digital Painter

“I’m a photographer, but also a digital painter,” says Jean-François Rauzier, the French creator of fabulous digital worlds. He calls his collages ‘hyperphotos’. Not only because they are composed of hundreds of photos, consisting of up to 2 billion pixels, but primarily because his work is inspired by hyper-realist art. Rauzier’s collages are incredibly detailed recreations of reality, giving rise to fabulous fantasies in which viewers can zoom and navigate around at will, losing themselves for hours.

Rauzier was fascinated by photography from an early age and eventually attended the Ecole Nationale Louis Lumière in the Parisian suburb Noisy-le-Grand. When digital photography arrived on the scene, Rauzier was immediately fascinated. He taught himself the art of digital retouch and came up with the idea for hyper-photos in 2002, featuring collages of repetitive, mirrored and altered photo fragments. You can access Rauzier’s dream worlds via his website. The hyper-photographer’s work has been exhibited all over the world and has won numerous awards in Germany and France.
