The unbelievable Art of Paper

A blank sheet of paper is all Simon Schubert needs to conjure up a stately stairway or a sumptuously decorated ballroom. By simply folding the paper back and forth, he creates extraordinarily detailed drawings in relief of magnificent palace interiors and other architectural spaces.

Sometimes we see a human figure in the interplay of light and shadow, but he also allows fantasy to take over, with stairways rising up our of the water and other dreamlike imagery.

Simon Schubert studied sculpture at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art and now lives and works in Cologne, where he was born and raised. Inspired by the surrealists and the writing of Samuel Beckett, Schubert also creates installations and sculptures using a variety of techniques. His sculpture of a woman in a bath, blanketed by her own hair was part of the Saatchi Collection in London.

In his modern absurdism, Schubert captures a sense of isolation and anxiety and explores ideas on existence. His work has been exhibited throughout Europe. In 2008, he won the ZVAB Phönix Art Prize for young talent.
