Stephen Cave

Philosopher, Writer and Critic

“Stephen Cave's Immortality is a must-read exploration of what spurs human ingenuity,” according to the New Scientist. And the Financial Times described his book, subtitled “The quest to live forever and how it drives civilization” as “an epic inquiry into the human desire to defy death – and how to overcome it.”

The British philosopher Stephen Cave’s first book was simultaneously released in several languages in the spring of 2012, to universal acclaim. Using the stories of ten exceptional historical figures, from Queen Nefertiti to the Dalai Lama, Cave explains how all ideas about defying death can be classified into four categories. He describes how the four ancient paths to immortality have shaped our culture and discusses how science is now showing us which of them could really lead to infinity.

Cave was awarded his PhD in metaphysics from the University of Cambridge and went on to work as a diplomat before dedicating himself to writing. He writes regularly for the Financial Times, and has also written for the New York Times, the Guardian, Wired and others. He now lives in Berlin with his wife, the journalist Friederike von Tiesenhausen, and their daughters.
